About Our Classes

Our mission is in guiding participants in learning the art of Capoeira Angola, a traditional folk-sport with elements of self-defense, music, acrobatics, dance, etc. Classes are taught by instuctors Rato and Pensador, both of whom have studied this tradition under the guidance of Mestre Pererê for over a decade. Together they provide challenging and fun lessons to both completely new students as well as experienced players. Skills that are taught include graceful kicks, slippery body-twisting escapes, jaw-dropping acrobatic flourishes, etiquette for playing the game, strategies for winning the game, how to play and sing traditional Capoeira Angola music, and exercises for keeping your game sharp.

Some of the many benefits of practicing this art include:

-Acquiring physical mobility, strength, endurance, coordination and gracefulness
-Relief of stress, improved mood, and all other health benefits of aerobic/cardiovascular exercise and strength training
-Development of musical skills
-Skills and context with which to play, train, and interact with other players around the world
-Exposure to the Portuguese language, as well as history and cultural context of Capoeira Angola
-Practical and efficient strategies for self-defense practiced in a safe environment
-Cultivating greater awareness of one's body and surroundings while remaining relaxed and playful
-An opportunity to unlock potential you may not have considered and do things you never thought you could
-The opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and perspectives from a centuries-old tradition.
-Having a ridiculous amount of fun!

About Our Kids Classes

Capoeira Angola is an excellent activity for kids! These classes give kids the opportunity to learn Capoeira movements, music, and gameplay in a fun way. This not only provides great physical exercise, but is also an excellent way for them to interact with other kids in a setting that values respectful yet playful competition as well as cooperation. These classes also explore Capoeira music and song, giving students a chance to build a foundation in musical skills as well as exposure to another language and culture. Parents of our students have reported their kids being more focused, more social, and less hyper after attending our classes regularly.

Other options for prospective students, visiting capoeira players, and or people who would like to learn more:

Rodas: FREE! The roda is the game-ritual that all of our classes and programs are geared towards preparing students to participate in. The roda is a circle comprised of players and onlookers with a row of musicians at one side. Two players enter the circle and utilize their skills and wit to outmaneuver one another. Our rodas are always free for anyone to come watch, or for visiting capoeira players to participate in. This is really the best way to become acquainted with what our tradition involves.

Drop-in classes: Tuesdays and Saturdays fundamentals classes are available for $15 per class. Occasional drop-ins are for prospective students who want to see what classes are like before signing up, or for people who just want to experiment with new ways of moving or get some exposure to traditional capoeira music. Visiting capoeira students are also welcome to do drop-in classes if they would like to experience training in our group.

Private training: if none of our classes fit your schedule or you would just like to have a one-on-one or small group training with our instructors, private sessions are available for $50 per person for a 90-minute session.
