About Our Classes

These classes focus on guiding participants in learning the art of Capoeira Angola, a traditional folk-sport with elements of self-defense, music, acrobatics, dance, etc. Classes are taught by instuctors Rato and Pensador, both of whom have studied this tradition under the guidance of Contra Mestre Pererê for over a decade. Together they provide challenging and fun lessons to both completely new students as well as experienced players. Skills that are taught include graceful kicks, slippery body-twisting escapes, jaw-dropping acrobatic flourishes, etiquette for playing the game, strategies for winning the game, how to play and sing traditional Capoeira Angola music, and exercises for keeping your game sharp.

Some of the many benefits of practicing this art include:

-Acquiring physical strength, flexibility, stamina, coordination and gracefulness
-Relief of stress, improved mood, and all other health benefits of aerobic/cardiovascular exercise and strength training
-Development of musical skills
-Skills and context with which to play, train, and interact with other players around the world
-Exposure to the Portuguese language, as well as history and cultural context of Capoeira Angola
-Practical and efficient strategies for self-defense practiced in a safe environment
-Cultivating greater awareness of one's body and surroundings while remaining relaxed and playful
-An opportunity to unlock potential you may not have considered and do things you never thought you could
-The opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and perspectives from a centuries-old tradition.
-Having a ridiculous amount of fun!

About Our Kids Classes

Capoeira Angola is an excellent activity for kids! These classes give kids the opportunity to learn Capoeira movements, music, and gameplay in a fun way. This not only provides great physical exercise, but is also an excellent way for them to interact with other kids in a setting that values respectful yet playful competition as well as cooperation. These classes also explore Capoeira music and song, giving students a chance to build a foundation in musical skills as well as exposure to another language and culture. Parents of our students have reported their kids being more focused, more social, and less hyper after attending our classes regularly.

Other Learning Opportunities

Here are some other learning opportunities that we offer besides our regular ongoing classes:

Demonstrations - Usually consists of a roda (which includes movement and music) and possibly some discussion. A great way to introduce a group of people to this tradition.

Workshops - Workshops can last from one hour to many hours and can focus on any aspect of the art such as fundamental movements, music, or both.

Introductory Courses - These are usually once or twice a week and last 4 or more weeks. They are designed to give students enough knowledge and skills to fully participate in a roda.

Private Lessons - This is mostly for people who are really eager to learn Capoeira but unable to make it to any of our regular classes.

If you are interested in any of these and would like more information, contact us at:ratinho@capomaha.com or call Tommy at (402)-547-8327
